EVENT INFO: Dr. Joyce Smith will describe the continuum of emotion to illness for depression and anxiety which are common non motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Dr. Smith will also discuss helpful strategies for managing symptoms, like relaxation, meditation, mindfulness, exercise, and challenging negative thoughts.
Dr. Joyce K. Smith, Psy.D. is a psychologist with over 42 years of experience. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Allegheny College, a Master’s degree from Edinboro University of PA, and a Doctorate of Psychology degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Smith has provided a multitude of services to children, adolescents, adults, and older adults for various mental health needs. She has worked in wide array of settings including community-based consultation for developmentally challenged adults, geriatric outreach to identify mental health needs and minimize hospitalization and forensic mental health counseling. Dr. Smith has been a liaison with schools and has co-facilitated support groups for families of the severely mentally ill and survivors of suicide. She has provided individual and group therapy to individuals with severe mental illness in a partial hospitalization program, as well as individual and family therapy in community mental health and private practice for such issues as depression, anxiety, grief and loss, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, relationship issues and stress management. Dr. Smith has conducted psychological evaluations on an inpatient mental health unit as well as for outpatient clients. These evaluations included pre-surgical evaluations for spinal implant and gastric bypass, evaluation for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and lethal weapons certification for local law enforcement officers. She is also trained in mediation and collaborative divorce work, with a focus on helping couples and families work through difficult times in a more positive, less emotionally damaging way. Dr. Smith recently retired from direct clinical services at Cranberry Psychological Center after serving more than 17 years there.
